Back to clay for the late spring and early summer. These are some 10” sgraffito plates I’ve been working on.
The weather has been too hot for pottery so I’m back to a few studies to try out some new supplies.
This paper is rather more textured that I like but it holds the darker colours well.
I’ve been fascinated of late by the autumn and winter mushrooms. Though many found here are subtle in colour, who can resist an old favourite of children’s fairy book creators?
Autumn’s in the air
Been busy tidying and getting ready for the new season. Time’s been tight of late with a few commissions to get done but I’ve been sketching and doing a few studies for other projects.
Covid’s tail has left us deflated and discombobulated. Still Spring is nearly here again and I’ve been thinking about painting a series of water colour birds.
flower study
Flower study on some new water colour paper as a trial - Bockingford Hot Pressed paper. While I loved the feel of this paper for watercolour, it did ‘t really suit colour pencil work. There isn’t much too tho the paper and so layering was rather troublesome but hey, that’s why we investigate materials with smaller studies before committing to a larger piece.
Chocoholic
I love painting furry portraits. This chocolate labrador looks ready for a treat. Doggy chocolates only, of course.
Watercolour
It’s been delightful to work on a watercolour of this lovely lady. A few more tweaks and it’ll been on its way.
I hope she likes it!
Nasturtium
I always throw a few sacrificial nasturtiums in the green house to try to keep the whitefly at bay. This year I wanted to get a study painted before they get to the straggly and rather glum stage which comes upon them all too quickly.
Trying to get deep, saturated colour in watercolour can be tricky - especially in red and orange both of which can become flat very easily.
Summer at last
Summer
Crikey, this spring has take a dreadfully long time to break into the start of summer but at long last, I’ve been able to lift my hem line from ankle to knee and soak in a bit on nature’s Vitamin D.
There’s an abundance of wild flowers in the hedgerows thanks to the farmers leaving it a few weeks longer in recent years before they trim things back. Plenty of violets which is a treat - such delicate little petals.
I’m thinking I might put a few florals in my painting playlist as see what comes of it.
